Is Turmeric Curcumin useful for Weight loss, Alzheimer's? What are some cardiovascular benefits?
Scientists proved that Curcumin and other Turmeric constituents have unique health benefits as anti-inflammatory and as an antioxidant herb. It can also be useful in Alzheimer’s.
Modern research has shown that Turmeric Curcumin has beneficial effect on the liver and stimulates the flow of bile. Curcumin can increases thermogenesis leading to increased fat burning, hence weight loss. Thermogenesis occurs when the Central nervous system triggers the burning of fat, to maintain the body’s temperature. The studies done by Dr.Ascei and Dr.Miyazawa concluded that turmeric extracts lower fats in the blood stream and reduce weight gain.
Researchers proved that Curcumin reduces the amyloidal protein plaques associated with Alzheimer's. Extensive research is being conducted with the help of National Institute of Health (NIH.Gov) to document benefits of Turmeric for Alzheimer’s.
Turmeric‘s Cardiovascular benefits are also being extensively studied. Curcumin lowers cholesterol and triglyceride levels, decreases susceptibility of low density lipoprotein (LDL), to lipid per-oxidation thus inhibiting platelet aggregation. Ref 1) Ramirez-Tortosa MC, Mesa MD, Aguilera MC, et.al.
Turmeric Curcumin supplements that have pure Curcumin extract should be beneficial to most people, for cardiovascular health and weight loss. When combined with Ashwagandha and Boswellia, the product becomes extremely potent.

Boswellia is a purified resin obtained from the gum of Boswellia Serrata tree. This sticky resin from the tree is called Indian Frankincense. The anti inflammatory and anti arthritic properties are attributed to the presence of Boswellia acid and related Triterpene acids.
Studies have shown that Boswellic acid have anti inflammatory property. This is achieved by the formation of Leukotriens. Any of a group of eicosanoids that are generated in basophiles, mast cells, macrophages and human lung tissue by lipoxygenase catalyzed oxygenation.
Boswellia has no side effects like “NSAID Drugs”. Research done in India and Germany has recently confirmed, Boswellia’s therapeutic efficacy; It has shown advantages over than non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDS).

Is Turmeric Curcumin an Anti-Carcinogen?
The incidence of lung cancer is four times higher in the UK than in India, although it is becoming increasingly common throughout the World. Breast cancer accounts for around 20-25% of all female cancers in both USA and UK, but the incidence in the UK per 100,000 women is three time higher than in Mumbai, India, according to a study done by a UK publication. What could be some of the common reasons for this? Does this have to do something with the Indian diet and cooking with an herb called Turmeric? For centuries Indian cooking included a spice herb called Turmeric. Is this it, that does the trick?
There are certain herbs in the world that are supposed to have anti-carcinogen properties. One such herb is Turmeric. Curcumin the active constituent of Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic and anti-oxidant activities.
Some of the research done on the Turmeric and Curcumin is listed below-
According to university of Chicago Scientists, Curcumin inhibits a cancer provoking bacteria (H.Pylori) associated with gastric and colon cancer. (Ref. Mahady GB, Pendland SL, Yun G, Luzz. Anti Cancer Res. 2002, Nov-Dec; 22 (6c) 4179-81)
Dietary supplementation of Curcumin enhances anti-oxidant and Phase II metabolizing enzymes in ddY male mice. Possible role in protection against chemical carcinogenesis and toxicity has been studied. The significance of these results can be implicated in relation to cancer chemo preventive effects of “Curcumin against the induction on tumors in various target organs” ((Iqbal M, et al. Pharmacol Toxicol. 2003 Ja; 92 (1): 33-8))
Curcumin has direct anti-angiogenic activity in Vitro and in vivo. The activity of Curcumin in inhibiting Carcinogenesis in diverse organs such as the skin and the colon may be mediated in part through angio-genesis inhibition. (Ref. Arbiser JL, Klauber N, Rohan R, Van Leeuwen R, Fisher C, Flynne E, Byers HR. Mol Med 1998 Jun, 4(6) : 376 – 83)
Scientists have known for a long time that this natural compound has the potential to treat faulty cells that have become cancerous and It is suspected that Curcumin might have this therapeutic value. Curcumin from Curcuma Longa exhibited anti-tumor promoting activity in mouse skin (Carcinogenesis (Nishio H et al, Kyoto, Japan 1992; Oncology (Life Sciences Advances) V11 (2), 65-69.)
Curcumin I, II and III isolated from Curcuma Longa were compared for their Cytotoxic, tumor reducing and antioxidant activities. All Curcuminoids inhibited the tumor growth but Curcumin III produced maximum increase in life span (74.1 percent). The Curcuminoids also inhibited lipid peroxidation (Anto RJ et al, Amala Research Bulletin, v14, 60-65, 1994).
In the end, a lot of research is still being done and some of it by the National Institute of Health (NIH.Gov) to validate Turmeric Curcumin’s anti-carcinogenic properties. Stay tuned for updates.
